Fishing the Ranfurly Banks is truly a once in a lifetime experience! Situated 25 nautical miles east of Hicks Bay off the East Cape of New Zealand, the Ranfurly Banks is world renowned as a top fishing mecca destination.

This isolated fishing area covers over 30 miles. It ranges in depths from 1000 metres to a shallow plateau coming within 20 metres of the surface. Fishing is mainly in depths ranging from 30 to 180 metres.

Ranfurly Banks is a very similar area to top fishing mecca locations like the King Bank and the Middlesex Bank off the Three Kings Islands in the Far North.

Coastal Fishing Charters Ranfurly Banks day trips depart from Hicks Bay (Onepoto Road) around 6:30am and arrive at the fishing grounds in about an hour. Less travelling time means more fishing time! Charters return to Hicks Bay at around 5pm.

Cost of Ranfurly Banks fishing trips

Day trips to the Ranfurly Banks costs $3,500 for 1 – 5 people. This includes all rod hire, bait, tackle and salt ice for your trip home (user pays for lost tackle). If required, we can organize accommodation in Waihau bay or Hicks bay for your stay before and after the charter.

Charters to the Ranfurly Banks are available all year round dependent on the weather.

  • You drive to Waihau Bay or Hicks bay (unlike the sea, the road only gets rough at road works), where various accommodation options await. See the information below on the Waihau Bay Lodge or the Hicks bay motel and links to their websites)
  • When leaving for Ranfurly it’s a 5 min drive from the Hicks bay motel. Or it’s a 35 – 40 min drive in the morning from Waihau Bay to Hicks Bay ( Onepoto Road ) where the boat is generally launched.
  • Then it’s 1 hour to the Ranfurly Banks and you are Fishing!!!
